Eco-friendly comment encourages expansion

Nathalie H from the U.K. writes...

Alpaca fibre seems to tick all the right boxes.

1. It is animal friendly, and cruelty free, as the animal is not killed, so appeals to vegetarians like me.

(Merino sheep in Australia are subjected to a hideous practice called mulesing, which people do not realise is going on, and people think that lambswool in the UK simply involves a haircut, but in reality, the animal has to be slaughtered very young for its meat, as the fleece on its own is almost worthless, as it just can not compete with cotton, & synthetics. That is why I like alpaca, because its fibre is highly valued in the marketplace.

2. It is also earth-friendly, because like you say so little industrial detergents are needed, as there is no lanolin. And it is biodegradeable of course, unlike sythetics.

For me, a perfect garment would also involve eco-friendly dyes, which unfortunately is still in its infancy.

Nathalie's comments highlight one of the strongest growing trends in eco-shopping, a desire to purchase fashions which not only look good but are good. PurelyAlpaca strives to use suppliers which follow fair trade principles, do not harm animals and reduce pollution to the environment.

Alpaca is naturally Earth-friendly due to its very nature. It has the added natural benefit of being washable in mild soap (instead of harsh polluting chemicals).

PurelyAlpaca regularly seeks products from vendors that work with small groups on indigenous peoples who earn their livelihood entirely from alpacas.

In my opinion, Alpacas, perhaps the world's oldest domestic livestock is poised to be the natural, non-polluting, eco-friendly clothing fashion material of this new century.

Alpacas in the News

Alpacas in the News - From the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association (AOBA)

This article highlights the growth of the alpaca fam industry in the USA. Small American (and Canadian) farm growth is supported by the quickly growing alpaca garments industry.

For Immediate Release - October 5, 2008
Alpacas were on the front page of the Wall Street Journal, Friday October 3, 2008 with a catch title that is sure to spark interest. There was also an alpaca photo.
“When Stocks Tank, Some Investors Stampede to Alpacas and Turn to Drink”
by JENNIFER LEVITZ
Associated Press

Quoting the article:
“Peggy Parks, a 49-year-old auditor in Johnstown, Pa., turned to an unusual farm animal. "I've lost a fortune in stocks, and my 401(k) is falling through the floor. I feel comfortable in alpacas," she says. She invested $56,000 in a small herd that she believes has a better outlook than most mutual funds because of the animals' breeding potential. The national Alpaca Registry Inc., in Lincoln, Neb., says registrations are on pace to rise 7% this year and currently stand at 140,297. Ms. Parks says a female of "medium quality" can fetch $10,000 and that prices have been rising, supporting her hopes that she'll see a profit on her alpaca portfolio in five years.”

They Will Beat a Comfortable Path to Your Door

They Will Beat a Comfortable Path to Your Door
Perhaps you have heard of Reflexology, the act of applying pressure to the feet (and hands) to affect the health of the body? The idea is with the proper stimulation, you can effect beneficial and healthy change in the individual. Not having tried it, I don’t know about how well Reflexology works but I see a strong analogy between Reflexology and the humble alpaca sock.

Alpaca socks do for the alpaca owner (and alpaca industry) what Reflexology purports to do for the body, bringing healthy positive change and new awareness. With their superior qualities of comfort, warmth, strength, breathability, odor control and hypoallergenic nature, alpaca socks can be thought of as little ambassadors of good on a mission. Alpaca socks introduce the wonder of alpaca fiber in a simple yet soundly convincing manner.

Having sold alpaca retail products for a number of years I always smile with anticipation at the prospect of an enthusiastic sale when a customer says, “Someone gave me an alpaca ( ) once”. This customer already gets it! They are converts to the luxury and pleasure of alpaca fiber. They are quite pleased to have found a source for products made from this still exclusive material. They understand the value, the price and are most willing to buy.

If you are like most alpaca breeders you wish to promote your alpacas and the alpaca industry as a whole. You ache to tell stories of fine comfort, warmth and the special feel that only alpaca brings. One simple and cost effective method for delivering that message is the humble alpaca sock. With its many fine characteristics, alpaca socks open the door to your customers to think of alpaca the way we do, as a highly useful, luxurious and renewable natural fiber that is perfect for our age.

Getting your prospects into a pair of alpaca socks will get then feeling and thinking about the alpaca industry, its unique nature and your farm. If you have a farm store (or chest of goodies) it will likely lead to sales of more socks, hats, gloves, scarves and larger items. The socks will surely help your prospects to see what this alpaca thing is all about, making your animal sale prospects that much easier.

In an age when advertising can be so expensive, referrals from happy advocates of your business are nothing short of golden. With a little creativity and small expense, the simple alpaca sock can be leveraged to bring you lots of business for your farm store and farm. How do you do it? Find some talkers! Seek out pleasant people who like to chat, perhaps to a fault! Perhaps your hairdresser/barber, your favorite waitress or barista talk away the hours of their work day with friendly conversations. They stand most of the day and appreciate comfortable feet. Find people who are around lots of people and friendly. GIVE them a pair of your favorite alpaca socks! These talkers could easily be raving fans of your socks. They will also promote your farm at the same time as they promote their new happy feet!

Perhaps a family Dentist chats away, or your doctor or someone at your local grocery store that you like. Maybe it’s a fire fighter, EMT or police officer, a person who works outside and works with a lot of other people. Maybe your pastor or mail carrier or kid’s teacher would be a good candidate. Perhaps the gabbiest person in your walking or hiking club, the list of possible candidates is endless. If they know people and spend time on their feet you could have a raving fan that will tell countless people about you, the great exclusive socks you have and your farm of alpacas.

When giving away socks, it is best to pick those that can be easily washed and dried unless the recipient knows they are getting specialty (aka hand wash/no dryer) socks. If your recipient has a family or co-workers, etc,. be sure that you give only ONE pair! The others around them get to hear how wonderful the socks are and can come to you to purchase theirs.

With alpaca socks you have a fun and profitable way to promote your business, one pair of feet at a time.

Winter fun for the feet

Wow, time flys by. I haven't posted anything for a while. Not that we haven't been busy at PurelyAlpaca developing new socks, new slippers even a new company! Even though it's July, our thoughts are on the fall and winter.

This year we're proud to announce Choice Alpaca Footwear as a new enterprise which will focus on the manufacture of top quality footwear based upon the excellent qualities of alpaca. Our first product, the Superwarm alpaca sock, is the result of 5 years of customer research and asking the question, "What makes the ultimate winter sock?". ChoiceAlpacaFootwear.com will handle wholesale sales in bulk for this sock and all upcoming designs. PurelyAlpaca.com will be one of the many retailers which offers Choice Alpaca Footwear items to the public.

Socks to Afghanistan

Last year a friend of ours put out a call for help, sending warm alpaca socks to soldiers. Amazing that this might appear, the ARMY's socks are lousy in cold weather. Those of us who know and love alpaca fiber know what a great sock you get when adding a good percentage of our favorite fiber to the mix.

Last year hundreds of socks were donated from alpaca farmers, alpaca retails, the American Co-Op organization and regular folk everywhere. This year the program has the goals of sending thousands to troops in Afghanistan.

Being 45 I can now say that these "kids", some 18, many under 21, are out there, risking their lives thousands of miles away from home in harsh cold weather. The Socks Brigade program not only provides soft, cozy and warm socks for the feet, it warms the soldier's heart to know there is someone back home thinking about them and their difficult task.

This not about politics
, it's about our young people risking life and limb and those of us who care having a small way of telling them so. Please feel encouraged to join us.

Through February (or until we run out), PurelyAlpaca is donating a pair of the USA made Extreme socks for every order we receive in which you buy a pair for yourself.

Click the link in the title to see more about this simple and heartfelt program.

Wear the Eco-Friendly Label

Wear the Eco-Friendly Label

We all care about the environment to some extent. Each of us has our own ways of showing it, but most of us would like show that we care to ourselves if not also others. There are different ways of demonstrating your eco-friendliness. Maybe you separate your recycling or purchase eco-friendly groceries with non-polluting packaging. Perhaps you help your employer with their Adopt-a-Highway efforts every year, or have your own stretch of clean highway? Maybe you donate to the Audubon Society or other groups and enjoy the membership.

However you otherwise choose to give back, consider becoming a more eco-friendly clothing shopper. Not only can you help the Earth with your eco-friendly shopping, you can help yourself to become a healthier person.

What is Eco-Friendly Shopping?
Eco-friendly shopping doesn't mean that you have to stop buying meat, or live an austere life in order to save the planet. In most cases, it doesn't involve anything more than a slight shift in shopping habits, and in turn you help your family to live a healthier lifestyle.

Eco-Friendly Clothing
One way of becoming a more eco-aware shopper is to buy eco-aware clothing. Consider the many benefits of alpaca. Alpaca fiber is an awesome eco-friendly material that everyday people use and love, perhaps without completely realizing the scope of its personal and environmental healthy difference. Alpaca sweaters, alpaca scarves, and alpaca wool socks keep people warm in winter throughout the world. Luxurious alpaca blankets adorn many a bed and living room couch. Alpaca coats and wraps give one the look of fashionable comfort. They are beautiful quality products from one of the most earth-friendly animals out there.

Why the Alpaca?
What makes the alpaca so Earth friendly? The alpaca is a natural when it comes to conservation, pollution reduction and sustainability. First and foremost, the alpaca produces a pollution free fiber which they will gladly share with you as they are shorn (without harm) annually.

Alpacas, which have been determined to be the world’s oldest domestic livestock, are happy to give up their thick annual growth of dense, warm and luxuriously soft fiber as spring turns into summer. Picture how uncomfortable you would be wearing the equivalent of 3-4 heavy winter coats in mid summer! The newly naked alpaca will be bounding with springtime joy and energy after their thick fleece has been claimed for a new alpaca sweater, scarf or socks.

Alpacas are South American in origin and are very distant relatives to camels. You’ll notice this when you see their unusual running style, their “cush” sitting position, and more. It’s also evident in the lower amount of water they consume. The 160 lb average alpaca eats less per pound and their efficient 3-stomach digestive system metabolizes grass and hay more efficiently than nearly all other livestock.

Alpacas actually “cut” the grass with their unusual front incisor teeth rather than chewing it, and the roots, out of the ground like some other livestock.

Their lightweight, soft two toed foot (no hoof) is soft on the ground which reduces soil damage. Also, the other alpaca byproduct, “PacaPOO” is pH balanced and an excellent, natural, slow-release low-odor fertilizer.

The conservation continues even more so after the fiber is shorn from the alpaca. Unlike sheep wool which contains the allergen oil lanolin, alpacas are lanolin free. Lanolin is a type of thick oil which causes skin irritation in many people. It requires a harsh multi-stage detergent wash (read pollution) to remove it during processing. Not only do alpacas lack lanolin naturally, the fine and smooth nature of their resilient hollow-core fiber keeps prickly barbs from poking your skin.

Alpaca fiber comes in a whole array of colors naturally, and many alpaca products are available in natural colors. Alpaca also dyes very well and takes color nicely from plant and other natural dyes so you don't have to worry about artificial dyes irritating delicate skin or causing more pollution.

Finally, one other key factor to consider is economic as well as environmental sustainability. Tens of thousands of alpacas are raised by thousands of small family farms and ranches throughout the country. Your alpaca apparel purchases support those family farms, the products industry they serve as they raise some of the cutest, most colorful livestock you will ever see.

With all this going for them you could say, “Alpacas are Saving the Earth, One Sweater at a Time!”

Update on Research Rugs, a Magic Carpet?

The Alpaca Research Rug is proving to be a sort of a Magic Carpet. As word spreads of the research rug program, more and more ideas are coming up for this unique alpaca fiber creation.

One recent idea has been to promote the rug and the program at alpaca auctions. Before the auction begins, the first item to go "on the block" would be an alpaca research rug. The auctioneer would describe how the rug is created from what was formerly called "trash" fiber (aka "3rds") to make the beautiful and strong item.

There would also be discussion of how many alpaca farms have generously donated their fiber for the project. At present the manufacturing mill has plenty of donated fiber from generous alpaca farmers and does not need more donations. If you would like to be notified of when there is again a need for alpaca 3rds donations, sign up for the PurelyAlpaca Newsletter (http://purelyalpaca.com/PurelyAlpacaNewsletter.htm). We will send out Research Rug updates via the newsletter.

Proceeds from rug sales on PurelyAlpaca.com benefits alpaca research and the training of new veterinarians.

Also, the rug is an excellent conversation piece for the home or office. It's strength, comfort and durability speaks volumes about the fiber from which it came. It's beauty shows how even the "throw away" fiber from alpacas has great value. And it confirms that ALL alpaca fiber has use and value.

Some are purchasing it as alpaca gift items in ways never anticipated. Though sold as a floor rug, many are using this lighter weight fiber creation as a wall hanging.

Some are putting it under their desk at work for a warm, comfortable home for their feet. Others use it as a soft pad in their job where they stand all day.

One enterprising individual took the small 2x3 rug to a sporting event. They say it is better then those plastic foam pads, is naturally warm and has led to many conversations with others about the many benefits of alpacas!

With all this going for it, perhaps the Alpaca Research Rug really is a Magic Carpet!

See the Research Rug at PurelyAlpaca.com .

How was your National Alpaca Farm Day?

National Alpaca Farm Day is coming this weekend! We're very curious about how it will go both for our own farm and nationally.

It's been a pretty positive development in the national alpaca community as far as I can see, though I'm sure someone somewhere will fine reasons to not like it :(

How was YOUR National Alpaca Farm Day event? If you used products (ours and/or others) did they help you promote the animals? We've often found the products are a GREAT conversation piece as they show directly "what alpacas do for a living". It's also a positive way to earn some farm income.

Feel free to post your comments on your experiences with National Alpaca Farm Day. Pictures would be GREAT if you have em! Post as comments here, email me or join the new

An alpaca fan club?

This past weekend we held an event on our farm (yes, we of course raise alpacas too!). The topics of discussion among breeders frequently focused on the promotion of alpaca clothing. We all agreed on the superior qualities of alpaca fiber to other fibers. We all wear and love alpaca clothing.

Yet we all acknowledged that alpaca is not as promoted as fibers such as cashmere or merino. So last night all this "gelled" into the idea of an "Alpaca Fan Club". The club would be for fans of alpaca clothing with the goal of promoting alpaca as a clothing alternative to the world.

Most people who try alpaca for the first time are amazed at the comfortable warmth, softness and general feeling elegance it brings. People who try our Extreme Alpaca Socks are often just plain EXCITED at the difference alpaca brings. These "converts" are perfect to help spread the word about this amazing fiber.

So we haven't worked out the details yet but you should expect that PurelyAlpaca.com will launch an alpaca fan club community in the near future. We're thinking of sponsoring the group with free membership perks, promotional material and of course free gifts to our most prolific alpaca enthusiasts :)

Stay tuned... better yet, share your ideas as to what you think might make for a fun promotional alpaca fan club!

Alpaca Research Rug a Magic Carpet?

http://purelyalpaca.com/images/researchRug_loom.jpg

We're pretty excited at the response the Research Rug program has had in the alpaca world!

Started as a colmination of ideas wanting to support a local alpaca veterinarian college and promote alpaca fiber, the Research Rug is now a nationally known endevour which continues to grow.

There are currently about 1000 pounds of alpaca fiber at a small mill in Texas. This fiber will be turned into beautiful floor rugs or wall tapestries. We couldn't be happier!

At present we have lots of fiber. The mill is full-up. We would encourage you to consider purchasing a rug for your home, farm store or public event. They come with a great story so make an excellent conversation piece!

HELP SUPPORT THE ALPACA "RESEARCH RUG" EFFORT

We are proud to support all things alpaca and have recently published this effort to various alpaca related newsgroups...

HELP SUPPORT THE ALPACA "RESEARCH RUG" EFFORT

Are you sitting on bags and bags of alpaca fiber 3rds and don't know how to put them to good use?

PurelyAlpaca (http://www.purelyalpaca.com/), and online alpaca products boutique and alpaca advocate invites you to get involved in the effort to support ongoing alpaca research and student veterinarians at the Washington State University (WSU) College of Veterinary Medicine in Pullman, WA (http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts-vth/camelids/). The Camelid Education and Research Fund had been to assist the WSU program through awareness and fundraising.
The WSU program has been a great benefit to Pacific Northwest alpaca farms and through its ongoing education and research helps alpaca owners everywhere.

To help support the College of Veterinary Medicine at WSU, PurelyAlpaca is soliciting alpaca farms everywhere to contribute their "2nds and 3rds" to the production of these excellent quality floor rugs for the home.

When an alpaca gets its annual shearing, the fiber is typically sorted into its Prime or Blanket (aka 1st) clip and its 2nds and 3rds clips, which may be put together or sorted. The Prime or Blanket clip, which comes from the main body of the alpaca is most commonly used for premium alpaca garments like sweaters. The "2nd" fiber from areas such as the neck or upper legs is typically used for hats or gloves. The "3rds", typically from the lower legs and belly and possibly chest are great for items like these rugs. The superior strength of alpaca fiber and its resitance to wear makes it an ideal rug material.

A portion of your purchase of this rug will go toward further research and veterinarian training at the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine. To learn more about the WSU program, see the link above or contact:

Lynne Haley
Veterinary Development and External Relations
P.O. Box 657010
Pullman, WA 99164-7010
(509) 335-5021

If you have an alpaca farm and would like to contribute to this good cause with your fiber, please contact http://www.purelyalpaca.com/ directly.

ABOUT THE RUGS

Made in the USA by Reinhard, an Austrian immigrant with 4-5 employees in a tiny factory on a dusty stretch of highway in the middle of the Texas plains, each rug is a work of art from this long time extraordinary rug weaver. The tiny factory sells its All American made goods to 300 outlets around the world including stores like Ethan Allen. The factory ships these soft rugs to the finer shops of Europe. One of the rugs "will probably outlast you," says Reinhard.

INSTANT new alpaca product feed

We were thinking....

Many of our customers are hitting the New Items link on PurelyAlpaca.com but unless they hit it daily they still might miss a new product. We literally have placed items online in our online boutique only to have them sold hours later. We're getting a lot of new items this year, many "on trial" as possible lines next year, so we'll have a lot of these unique offerings this fall. We have alpaca sweaters, alpaca scarves and new alpaca hats that are all limited run "test" items from artists in the USA and South America. There will be a lot of new alpaca products, alpaca yarn and gifts posted in the next couple of months.

So we figured a lot of our website visitors are missing out. Well this just won't do. :) So what we did was create a simple RSS Feed. This lets you use a freely available RSS reader to connect to PurelyAlpaca's RSS feed. This way, whenever we add or update a product you'll know about it, instantly.

We were thinking more...

This could be fun. We can put things up and see how long they last. If enough people use the RSS Feed perhaps we'll offer "instant sales", offering great bargains on items just for our most "attached" customers. Gee, what else could this lead to?....

To see more and sign up, go to http://purelyalpaca.com/rssfeed.html

Will you let us know your thoughts on the idea?

New old source of alpaca products?

Last weekend we went camping and fishing. It was a nice relaxing trip out to Southwest Washington state (not too far from where we're moving out new farm and warehouse). It was also my birthday. Lots of time to sit and think about our fall line of products, features and new offerings.

On the way home Frieda and I drove past a Sweater Store out in what most city folk would call "the middle of nowhere". This time they were open so in we went. Had to see if they had any alpaca!

Anni, a kind and relaxed woman warmly greeted us at the door. Though one customer was leaving with many smiles, Anni was still not alone. With her in this old Masons building turned clothing factory with tall white ceilings, a single heat stove and antique furniture was a mix of companions. There was a beautiful and sweet 3-legged white cat with one warm light green eye and another striking blue eye, another cat who was too busy sleeping to greet us and a mess of big and little dogs who stayed in the back room, mostly.

The store was an amazing trip back into time. A time where American merchants made and sold locally to local clientele. It was filled with clothing made "upstairs", we were told. We looked about the room for an hour. Though alpaca was not currently used in any of the products, my filtering eye saw Alpaca Sweaters, Alpaca Scarves, Alpaca Hats, Alpaca Gloves and Alpaca Shawls. The styles were classic and very well made. The artistic buttons on the cardigans are made right there at the shop.

Anni described how the company, 30 years old and in this location for the past 17 caters to a local clientelle but also sells to past customers who could now live anywhere. They get in yarn by the tons and do all the work in that one building.

Frieda and I were amazed! We have been seeking the country for companies like this. Many think the American garment industry is gone. Not true. It's just taking a new, more personal form. Anni's store, with its excellent personal service and very reasonable prices is the new American garment industry. We were very happy to see it.

ALPACA Project Helps Peruvian Alpacas and Aymara Indians

PurelyAlpaca is proud to support the ALPACA Project in the highlands of Southern Peru.

The Aymara people are Peruvian Indians who live, with their alpacas, in some of the harshest land in the world.

The "CHULLO" or Peruvian hat is a state of the art item which made of Baby alpaca fiber. It is hand spun and knitted for many days. The stitch and designs are unique to this region of the world. The "Chullos" are a result of the ALPACA Project, which is sponsored by Christian Veterinary Mission (CVM), a division of the Seattle based relief and Development agency, World Concern.

Established in March 1996, the ALPACA Project recognizes that people - especially women - in rural Peruvian villages often need training in animal and land management skills, and in developing markets for their products. ALPACA Project steps in - by providing mobile training teams to assist in these crucial areas, with the goal of each community becoming more self-sufficient. The result has been handmade high quality alpaca Chullos from the top of the world.

Among the most important of the ALPACA Project’s main goals have been:

To obtain better-quality healthier alpacas through selective breeding within foundation herds.
To provide improved health care to the approximately 500 participating rural farmer families, and for their alpacas.
To develop a marketing system that ensures fair prices are attained for high-quality livestock, these Chullos and other farm commodities.

When all is said and done, approximately 900 families benefit from the ALPACA Project, either directly or indirectly, including some 1,800 adults and 3,300 children.

A portion of the sales of these "Chullos" go directly to the Aymara communities of Peru.

Alpaca Industry Makes Headlines in North America

Since its introduction to the United States over twenty years ago, the alpaca industry has grown in popularity with farmers and retailers all over North America. Consumer demand is growing stronger each year, and this will leave an open door for new breeders and retailers nationwide.

(PRWEB) October 5, 2005 -- Since its introduction to the United States over twenty years ago, the alpaca industry has grown in popularity with farmers and retailers all over North America. Although alpacas originated in South America and are still found predominantly in that region, more and more alpaca farms are being developed around the world for two major reasons.

1. Alpacas are great animals with amiable personalities.
2. Alpaca fleece is used to produce natural, comfortable apparel.

In the year 2000, the United States was labeled the major market for alpaca clothing, textiles and accessories, with alpaca imports from Peru alone at an estimated USD $6.7 million. Today, another trend appears on the horizon. More and more breeding farms are developing in both the United States and Canada, and it is believed that new alpaca textile manufacturers are not far behind. Even the number of hand knitters who may have an interest in alpaca fabrics has increased to an estimated 28 million.

A multi-million dollar alpaca industry is projected in the United States as the public becomes aware of the benefits of alpaca fabrics. Nationwide marketing campaigns such as "I Love Alpacas" are revealing alpaca facts and benefits to consumers on a continual basis and providing easy access to learn more about alpaca farms.

A notable thirty percent increase was reported in the United States alpaca industry during 2004. PurelyAlpaca.com, a Washington retailer, attests to a 100 percent growth rate during the company's first three years, and its sales are expected to double again this year. Alpaca breeding is also on the rise in the United States, with an estimated 61,000 registered alpacas as of 2004.

The gentle nature of alpacas and the untold number of benefits from its fleece appeal to alpaca farmers like Frieda and Brian Schieber, founders of PurelyAlpaca.com.

"We feel alpaca fiber is a magical thing. Soft, warm, strong, naturally colorful and all so very healthy and natural", says Frieda.

Alpacas are tender animals akin to the llama family but with thick, soft fleece. Their fleece produces a smooth fiber that's hypo allergenic, washable and durable. Alpaca fleece is used to create luxurious sweaters, scarves, winter caps, and hundreds of other clothing products and accessories. Consumers love the comfort and natural of dyed colors of alpaca clothing.

Although alpaca breeding and retail imports currently dominate the United States market, the manufacturing aspect of the industry is expected to turn gradually more domestic as new breeding farms and alpaca fiber processing mills develop. Consumer demand is growing stronger each year, and this will leave an open door for new breeders and retailers nationwide.

PurelyAlpaca offers unique, incredibly beautiful alpaca clothing, accessories and gifts. From alpaca socks and yarn to alpaca sweaters and coats, PurelyAlpaca.com carries a wide and interesting selection of items. Joys of Knitting Alpaca

If you are a knitter, or know someone who is, alpaca yarns are a blessing to use. Most knitters we have met had not tried alpaca as a knitting yarn. Once they did, they discovered the amazing characteristics or softness, strength and comfort.

Some now tell us then can't touch wool anymore because as one knitter put it, "'cause it feels like sandpaper to me now!".

If you are new to knitting, there are a great number of sources on the web to help you. One we really like is from About.com. About.com talks "about" all kinds of things from politics to pastries. The knitting page is excellent and has ideas for the new and experienced knitter. Check it out at http://knitting.about.com.

See our yarns listed at: http://purelyalpaca.com/index.php/cPath/35
We have a large number of completely unique yarns which are not on the site due to their limited numbers. Contact us and we will describe them to you but basically we have hand spun, hand dyed, mixes (silk, etc) and experimental products. We also carry raw fiber, processed rovings (for spinners) and batts (for quilting). We're expecting to have processed alpaca felt cloth as well, great for felt hats and other unique creations.

Check back with us over the next month to see new yarns which will get put on the site, or contact us (yarn@purelyalpaca.com)and get on the yarns notification list.

Discover Alpacas - History and Products

Rarer and finer than even cashmere, alpaca wool is the softest, warmest, lightest, and healthiest fiber you can find. When you wear it, you enjoy a privilege once limited only to the noble or wealthy. Almost lost to us through over-hunting and isolation, alpacas now thrive not only in their native lands but in many other countries as well. These charming animals and the fleece they produce is shared by more people worldwide every year.

Alpaca has always meant luxury. Native Andean tribes first domesticated this descendant of the wild vicuña almost six thousand years ago. Beginning one of the earliest selective breeding programs in history, the result was a hardy yet docile creature with very fine fleece. So exquisite was alpaca wool that it became a measure of wealth in Andes society, the clothing of which only priests and royalty wore for centuries. After the fall of the Incan Empire, though, Spanish colonists viewed alpaca as competition to their sheep and slaughtered them almost to extinction. A few native tenders escaped with their precious herds, which they bred high on the Altiplano of South America. Due to the harsh conditions and poaching, these animals continued to dwindle in numbers.

Secluded from the rest of the world, the alpaca was almost forgotten until the 1800’s, when Sir Titus Salt invented an industrial method for manufacturing its wool. Using this rare and extremely fine specialty fiber, he produced a wonderful, soft cloth made for high fashion designs, including very expensive dresses popular with wealthy women throughout Europe. Alpaca apparel went into style in the United States during the 1920’s and has enjoyed rising demand here ever since.

A new era began in the 1980’s when alpacas from selected Chilean herds were exported to the United States and other countries. Generous tax benefits and excellent investment potential attracted many initial alpaca breeders. Because they are easy to raise, gentle on the environment, not raised for slaughter, and very friendly, people from all walks of life soon joined them not only for monetary gain but also the refreshing lifestyle running an alpaca farm offers. Nearly 50,000 alpacas live in the United States today, a number set to rise steadily over the next decades.

Rarity alone does not account for the great allure of alpaca clothing. Though five times warmer than sheep wool, alpaca wool is much lighter and breathes better than any thermal knit. It is free of oils and microscopically smooth , which makes it hypoallergenic and very comfortable even on bare skin. Although it dyes easily, the twenty-two recognized natural colors reduce the need for artificial coloring, allowing the fiber to retain its inherent characteristics without sacrificing variety. Clothing made of this material is resilient, durable, and lasts for generations - sometimes even hundreds of years!

Purely Alpaca proudly offers you authentic alpaca products from around the world. Our extensive catalog has something for your entire family, including alpaca clothing, rugs, yarn, jewelry, toys, and other wares at great prices. Gift certificates are also available. New items and special sales happen all the time, so check with them often. Sign up for their free newsletter to learn more about the joys of alpaca!

Testers wanted

We want PurelyAlpaca.com to be as clear, friendly and correct as possible. Unfortunately when you stare at your own web site for a long time you start to miss flaws.

Also, we would like to know what our customers would like to have, or not have, on the site.

If you are interested in testing all of the site, please let us know by email at tester@purelyalpaca.com. In exchange we can offer you not only our gratitude but a free gift or a substantial discount on one of our products.

Here are some key concept areas to think about while testing the site:

* are there typos?
* improve this product descriptions by saying...
* add this new category...
* list products this way...
* do this on the front page...
* which photos are terrible? (we're redoing many)
* improve flow of interface by doing...
* "this part doesn't make sense...."
* you should try this....
* I'd be more inclined to buy if the site had...
* take this out...
* I wish the site had....
* look at this other site, they do this...

If the tester could run through the exercise of creating an account and
purchasing that would also be helpful.
