PurelyAlpaca Buys Alpaca Fiber!

Seeking your alpaca fiber!

alpaca felt fiber call

Do you have alpaca fiber to sell?

Want to promote alpaca?

Want to join in on our Labor of Love?

We know there are a number of alpaca farms who have alpaca fiber that needs a new life as luxurious and functional alpaca products!  We use alpaca fiber for a number of projects like felt inserts, felt products, socks, accessories, yarn, etc.

This is a great opportunity to get value for your alpaca fiber while promoting American Alpaca Farms!

How does the Alpaca Fiber Call work?

Here’s the basic idea... but it can vary depending on the project:

  • Steps:
    1. Talk to us: email is also good, perhaps even better. Let us know what you have.
    2. Collect Your Fiber:  All fiber is useful, but not the really the wiry belly, lower leg fiber or short 2nd cuts stuff. All fiber needs to be free of vegetative matter, matting, "poo" and staining. Both Suri and Huacaya fiber can be used. Once you have selected the fiber you will send, weigh it and label the bag by weight and grade. If you already have the colors separated its likely best to keep it that way. Multiple smaller bags can be put into larger bags. We may request other identification depending on the requirements of specific alpaca product manufacturers.
    3. Let us know: Send us a note (fiber@purelyalpaca.com) with the approximate number of pounds per grade of fiber (1sts, 2nds, 3rds) that you plan to send.
    4. Mail Your Fiber: Once approved, we will provide an address for sending your fiber. We may also provide printable record keeping documents which will go into the bags prior to shipment, depending on where it will go.
Your fiber will most likely will go straight to a mill or sorting facility, depending on the project.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND TO OUR CLEAN PRODUCTS WAREHOUSE!

In prior fiber calls, we find that shipping 100 pounds or more can be done with Freight Shipping (we'll help arrange this) for about $1/lb. Combining your fiber with other farms might be a really good cost effective way to ship batches of 100-500 lbs. In some cases you may be able to drop it off at an alpaca show, saving shipping entirely. Again, it all depends as we do this multiple ways depending on the project, volume of fiber, receiving mill and time of year.
    5. Get Notified: After your fiber has been received and reviewed you will receive an email notification of the number of pounds of usable fiber attained from your shipment, as determined by the sorters. PLEASE do not send unusable fiber (tiny 2nd cuts, grass, twigs, rocks, POO, etc.), it hurts the process and is a waste of shipping $.
    6. Get Paid: For each pound of usable fiber that you send, you will receive payment in the form of a store certificates ("PacaBucks") which can be used for shopping for anything on our retail store, www.PurelyAlpaca.com.

      The rate is currently**:
$10/lb - Prime (1sts, best of the alpaca blanket)
      $8/lb - 2nds and 3rds

Note, this is of usable fiber as determined by the sorters who received the fiber. We do not offer cash payments. Paying for fiber in store product coupons helps us to be able to afford this process, and support the American Farms and Small Businesses who work tirelessly to promote American alpaca. Besides, we have 100s of great alpaca products you can get for your store, family and friends.
    7. Be Famous! In addition, your farm will be (optional) recognized and promoted as a fiber contributor in Purely Alpaca's website and media outreach!

Limited Collection: Though we work on this year round, we tend to do this work in large batches so there may be specific times when it is best to send in fiber depending on current projects.

** Please note, this project is not a big "money maker" for us. It's a Labor of Love. We can buy the products we need without going through all the management of a fiber collection and processing stream. But since starting in 2002 we have always sought ways to support the use of alpaca fiber produced by small American alpaca farms. With your help we will together assure a use for all American alpaca fiber in the production of useful products. These efforts are key to supporting small American alpaca businesses (farms, sorters, mills, retailers) while promoting alpaca!

If you would like to participate or just join a notification list for further announcements, details and developments, please email a note to fiber@purelyalpaca.com.

We welcome your questions and thoughts!

Regards,
-Brian and the PurelyAlpaca Team

Glenn, thanks for your message. I also responded to you a few days ago on email. At this time colors does not matter. We are supporting our Fiber Calls with multiple manufacturers so future calls might care about color. For now, have separate bags weighed for colors and grades (1,2,3). Make it obvious on the bags what we have as to Grade and Weight. If you use clear bags you can put a label inside, otherwise write it or tape it onto the bags.
Have fun at ALPACAPALOOZA! -Brian, PurelyAlpaca
